Hodges has been an artist throughout his life. His parents say they
don't remember a time during his childhood when he wasn't drawing or
painting. Hodges entered and won his first art competition at age 7
with a whimsical drawing entitled "A day in the park". He
continued to study art and show his work throughout high school and
received the Senior Merit Art Award.
As a fine arts student at East Carolina University, Hodges developed
an interest and concentrated his art history studies on the Impressionists,
Early 20th-Century Abstract Expressionists and Post Modernists movements.
He was attracted to the freedom of self-expression that emerged during
those periods and the celebration of art for art's sake.
After many years of working in black and white, Hodges began to incorporate
color into his work. His striking illustrations contain dominating themes
and unusual color combinations. His color pencil technique takes many
hours to achieve, effecting a softness and elegance usually seen only
in pastels, oil paints or airbrush. He has spent several years developing
this technique and is often asked how he achieves such a unique look.
Hodges's paintings and drawings have traditional themes with edgy,
bright colors that give them a contemporary bearing. His work has been
shown throughout North Carolina and Virginia. He lives in the Blue Ridge
Mountains of southwest Virginia. The natural beauty of the area is the
source of inspiration for much of his work.
